When the Moon...

The Moon is thought to be made of rock that was blasted from the Earth by a collision with a proto-planet that scientists have named Theia. This would have happened more than 4 billion years ago, when the Earth was (geologically) pretty young. The evidence for this is Moon rocks that are identical to Earth rocks. Because the Moon has no core, Theia must have just grazed the Earth, scooping rock from the outside parts of the Earth, but nothing from the center. Now scientists say they've found evidence in Moon rocks of that came from Theia!
