Welcome Visitor:

The Great Geologic Elevator

How continents rise to form mountains and plateaus and sink to form shallow seas.

Evidence of continents rising and sinking is all around us. For example, the center of North America was a shallow sea up to about 90 million years ago.  Now it's a mile high (1600 m) even at the base of the Rocky Mountains. Geo-scientists are finally beginning to get a handle on how this works.

The Grand Canyon

A national park service poster advertising the Grand Canyon from 1938

The Grand Canyon was created by the uplift of the Colorado Plateau (the Colorado River was able to cut through the rock as fast as it was uplifted).
